Today is Software Freedom Day 2008. So if you haven't converted to the ideals of free (libre) software, then today is a good day to start making the transition. ZinZam.com is run entirely on a free software platform, using Ubuntu Server 7.10, Mono 1.9, MySQL 5, and various other free software components (Including the Box Social software itself).
We all use free software in one form or another, in-fact it would be hard to imagine a world without free software. Companies like Google and Apple use free software to deliver you their products and actively give back to the community. Probably one of the most visible free software projects is Wikipedia, winner of the Free Software Foundation 2005 Social Benefit award.
For the moment I'm still stuck using windows vista as Ubuntu 7.10 doesn't support my display configuration (swapping between laptop display, or two external displays which are both different resolutions), and I haven't got my Vodafone modem to work correctly yet (though the beta software did install). I ordered myself an 8.04 CD, so I'll see how that works.
Work on Box Social continues (albeit at a slower pace since I agreed to go back to uni part time). It really needs more people using and testing the software. If you want to do me a favour and test, just register and have a play around. I am going to set up the management properly around Christmas, and need people interested to become members to the incorporated association (to meet the minimum requirement of 7). If you are interested in joining, just leave me a message and I will get back to you.
That's enough from me,
Until next time,
