Since installing Intrepid on my laptop I have been investigating whether I can seriously start using Ubuntu and MonoDevelop as a .net development platform for Box Social. The answer to that is now a resounding yes.
I can checkout SVN using rapidSVN.
I can open the solution using MonoDevelop.
I can compile the solution.
And one thing I couldn't do on Windows Vista, I can install apache, mysql, and mod-mono without the services crippling the performance of my laptop.
Now my Ubuntu desktop is setup as a development platform for Box Social, and it is excellent, and allows me to test my code without having to publish it to a second computer running Windows Server 2003.
The other nice thing about Ubuntu is it literally shuts down in 10 seconds, as opposed to windows which takes a minute. Much better for having to pack up quickly if you were in an airport, or on a bus or train.
And with that I have also fixed the write blog post account sub-module so I can post to my blog again.

Today is Software Freedom Day 2008. So if you haven't converted to the ideals of free (libre) software, then today is a good day to start making the transition. ZinZam.com is run entirely on a free software platform, using Ubuntu Server 7.10, Mono 1.9, MySQL 5, and various other free software components (Including the Box Social software itself).
We all use free software in one form or another, in-fact it would be hard to imagine a world without free software. Companies like Google and Apple use free software to deliver you their products and actively give back to the community. Probably one of the most visible free software projects is Wikipedia, winner of the Free Software Foundation 2005 Social Benefit award.
For the moment I'm still stuck using windows vista as Ubuntu 7.10 doesn't support my display configuration (swapping between laptop display, or two external displays which are both different resolutions), and I haven't got my Vodafone modem to work correctly yet (though the beta software did install). I ordered myself an 8.04 CD, so I'll see how that works.
Work on Box Social continues (albeit at a slower pace since I agreed to go back to uni part time). It really needs more people using and testing the software. If you want to do me a favour and test, just register and have a play around. I am going to set up the management properly around Christmas, and need people interested to become members to the incorporated association (to meet the minimum requirement of 7). If you are interested in joining, just leave me a message and I will get back to you.
That's enough from me,
Until next time,

I wasn't going to do another vlog, but I guess it's a good medium for showing stuff off. My friends don't seem to care, and since I'm isolated from them I guess I can share more using video.
Sorry, no open source bear hookers in this edition.
Does anyone else love Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire?
And there is this psycho family of Australian Magpies living outside, they keep attacking everyone. It only started this week, my landlord said they will stop by December! One attacked his wife on the weekend, nasty. Wikipedia says they can attack your face, I'd kind of like to keep mine thanks.

Having a full time job, I get 20 paid leave days of annual a year. The days are given to you pro-rata, which means you save them up during the year a couple a month, and then can "spend" them in chunks of your choosing.
I have already spent four leave days this year, which leaves me with 16 come January 2009. I also want to spend five days in Christchurch come December, and a couple of days in New Castle, Toowoomba, and Brisbane over Christmas.
Troy and Richard have proposed we go to Melbourne for a week in January or February.
Now because I want to take all this leave in a short space of only three months, I need to plan how much leave I can take, utilising weekends and public holidays (which are aplenty in December and January) to the fullest, while still being in the places I need to be on the date I need to be there.
On that note, this is the last Christmas before we all transition into the world of full time work, and the leave dilemma faces us all. It wouldn't be so bad had I got a job in Brisbane, where my social life still lives, but the fact is the logistics to get to Brisbane is to get anything out of a visit, requires at least one day of leave to be taken.

Jonathan did a wonderful job.
No-one cared more for phpBB than he ever did, a big thank you for servicing the community all those years.

There are various hobbies that keep people occupied. Some are free, while others cost considerably more to pursue, with some people taking it to the extreme. It is in fact that the pursuit of academia was once reserved for the wealthy with too much time on their hands.
For the past decade my hobby has been spending as much time on the computer being creative. Here I call software a creative industry, and I don't see why it shouldn't be considered so. First with application development, and moving into web application development. Best of all for a teenager, these pursuits didn't cost me any money, as I didn't have any.
Previously my hobby was building with Lego, Lego trains, and Lego Technic. However now that I work, I have a bit of money to pursue mechanical, and mechatronic hobbies again. Something that led me to major in Mechatronic Engineering at university. But the problem again is that applying my training to create a small robot as a hobby would be quite costly (at least the way I want to do it).
And again I elect for the cheap hobby, web development, and ZinZam continues to be worked on. My big overspecified/feature bloated blog :P
Maybe one day I'll bite the bullet and create a small robot. And when I do, I challenge you to create a better one than me.
